The owners of the company involved with recruiting are out on a BGN 600,000 bail and the company continues to do business!

The man, who is also accused of making threats against the investigators of the “Medical University” case, talked to the media.  He stated that he was misunderstood by the prosecutors.  He appeared in court in relation to a prior investigation against the former rector, Vanyo Mitev, as reported on Nova TV.

According to the prosecutor’s office, Anastas Tsikandelov is the owner of the company involved with recruiting and supporting the admission of foreign students to enter “through the back door”.  His whole family- both his wife and son are also charged.   The amount for bail was set at BGN 600,000.

Meanwhile, the company continues to recruit foreign students.  “It has been ten days since our family last slept; we are accused without any knowledge of the charges and accusations brought against us.”  Tsikandelov stated on the case.

According to the indictment, 20 students from Great Britain of foreign origin paid EUR 50,000 each to be enrolled and admitted into Sofia Medical University even though their documents failed to meet the requirements.  The former rector at the university, Vanyo Mitev, is also indicted in the case.

“This is a time during which I was not the rector.  These students were admitted and enrolled in September 2017.”  Academician Vanyo Mitev commented.  In his opinion, all of the students are full-time students who have been attending the lectures and seminars in the pre-clinical university center.  This was also confirmed by Vanyo Mitev during the inquest.

“My opinion is that that the prosecutor’s office and the investigative bodies should pay attention to the person, who supplies them with this information. I personally have no knowledge who he or she is” added Mitev.

“No corruption in relation to admission and enrollment could exist, because these are documents that meet the respective requirements. These documents are not checked by us” said the owner of the company – intermediary for students’ enrollment.

The investigation is ongoing. Meanwhile, the first charge for mismanagement against Vanyo Mitev was announced.
