The law suit against the former rector of Sofia Medical University Vanyo Mitev started in Sofia City Court. The indictment and charge is that he accepted students of Arabic origin with an exam in the English language, even though they did not know the language. Once accepted, these students were entitled to receive a permanent residence status in a member – state of the EU.

“The Students were admitted during the 2017 – 2018 academic year. This is a fact. We checked the records related thereto, they are currently in first year and their exam session started yesterday. Up until now, they have never appeared for exams. All of them are full-time students; all of them, without exception, have attended the lectures in the pre-clinical center. There are no students, who have been absent and who have not certified their semester books.”

This was said by the former rector of Sofia Medical University, Vanyo Mitev, in relation to charges, that he is a leader of an organized crime group, who recruited students that did not meet the requirements. Foreign students, who did not meet the minimum requirements to study at Sofia Medical University, have been paying about EUR 40 – 50 000.

He specified that he was rector until April 14 2016.

We would like to point out that Sofia Medical University’s former rector, Vanyo Mitev, has been charged with leading and controlling an organized crime group. 5 more people are accused with participation in the same crime group.

Mitev questioned investigators why this accusation was brought against him. He stated to the media that he was expecting an answer. He has made a check and inspection, demanding the files of the students from the Medical University.

“I think that the prosecutor’s office and the investigative authorities should pay more attention and investigate the informant who provided this information.” Mitev was categorical and specified that he has no idea who this person is, he may only presume.

“I simply cannot imagine that anyone would give EUR 50 000, since the exams are not that hard and easy to be taken.” said the former rector.

He said that if these students have false documents, this is easy to be established.

In his words, the persons who took advantage of these documents were responsible.

Vanyo Mitev also said that, under his management, Sofia Medical University has advanced further as development, and that his remuneration is to be under investigation for 8 years paid leaves.

Regarding the accusation for exotic trips, he said that he has prepared more than 130 pages for the State Financial Inspection Agency – explaining how much the university has gained from these trips.

Anastas Tsikandelov, also accused of being a member of the organized crime group, declared that his company still continues to recruit students for the medical universities. He states that he recruits about 350 students annually.

Dr. Tsikandelov’s company recruits students for the medical universities in Bulgaria. The students have always met the university’s requirements, with the documents being checked and inspected by the university itself. Tsikandelov suspects an attack against him.

Each and every student, who has worked with us, has had their documents checked and inspected. Each of them has signed an Affidavit for the genuineness of the documents, he specified.

“Who was the one accepting the documents at Sofia Medical University during 2014 – 2018?  The Department of Education”, he said and specified that the source of the attack is not from the Department of Education.

According to Tsikandelov’s, the 20 students are absolutely legal, full-time students who have proper documents, bearing the signature of Professor Zlatkov – the new rector of Sofia Medical University, and not of Vanyo Mitev.

Tsikandelov, who threatened the prosecutors that they will cry bloody tears, apologized to the investigators.
